See the two gigantic yellow arms, with claws? Those are robot grapples, each with the power to lift 50 tons, and spin at 70 kilometers per hour (12 revolutions per minute).
I'm sure that control of these metal monsters must be difficult, but Simon Wittber from the Australian firm Transmin has greatly simplified it using a Wiimote for controls.
That's right, the very device used to play WiiSports is now playing a new game! I have included a video of their demonstration that you can view after the jump, and it is something to see and hear.
While I was at Radio Shack the other day, I saw two things that caught my attention. The first was the sign out front was not changed to "The Shack", even though they officially changed their name to that about a month ago. The two guys working there didn't seem to know if or when that sign would be changed either.
I also got a chance to see an interesting toy that I'm surprised I haven't seen advertised during Spongebob Squarepants.
The Hexbugs come in four forms: the Ant, Inchworm, Crab, and Original. I have described each type from left to right in the photo after the jump.
The first time I saw this picture, I thought someone took an alien head and mounted it on the body of a UFO. In reality, this is the PetCare robot, a mobile webcam that allows you to monitor your pet from a distance.
I know when I leave my dog alone for a while, I would feel better if he was occupied by playing with this toy rather than chewing up my garbage. This is assuming that I have nothing better to do on my vacation than operate this toy on the Internet.
Not only is this camera/toy mobile by remote control through the Internet, but the ball that it bears is also remote control as well. In fact, the ball can be charged in the mobile camera itself. I'm not certain how the robot can be charged, or if it can be charged from a distance.
Of course, I was completely mesmerized when I saw this particular item of interest: a robot that obeys your thoughts.
Stop right there. Is this serious? Apparently so. Inventor Taku Ichikawa of the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo is creating this robot for the Robo-One contest in Toyama, Japan.
The Robo-One is sort of a battlebots style competition, and I suppose that thoughts really are the best interface for that. Unfortunately, this is about all the information my sources have about this.
This is an odd way to play pinball, don't you think? Shouldn't this man be standing in front of the machine? And what's with that wired bathing cap?
This is probably what I would have said if I was at CeBIT 2010 and passed by this display of the Berlin Brain-Computer Interface. As it turns out, this man is playing this game of pinball with his brain. I'm not saying that he's really getting his head into the game, but his head is playing the game.
You can watch a video of the setup of this person in action after the jump. I really have no idea if this man is just some visitor to CeBIT or someone who works for the company, but you can watch him as they set him up to play pinball on this Addams Family themed pinball machine. Yeah, I would have chosen a different theme, but the multiple flippers does make it interesting.
Unfortunately, there isn't really an explanation about how this works on the video, which has absolutely no voiceover narration. I have no idea if you have to think: "Left flipper, right flipper" to get it to work. I notice that this user has to manually start the ball rolling, and I'm guessing that mentally tilting is not an option.
I suppose we are probably looking at an age where arcade games make a comeback, and the players are jacked into them mentally. That, or come up with a console version of this mental controls. I suppose that this could be the next version of Project Natal.
So what are we looking at here? Is this some sort of weapon of mass destruction for your next paintball game?
No, this is the "large scale communication tool" called the Facadeprinter. It is a "software controlled paintball turret that is capable of blasting a wall with dots of paint traveling at 200 km/h, from a distance of 12 meters away". The machine is capable of firing 5 paintballs a second, and the colored pixels that it splats on the wall are about 5 to 10 centimeters in diameter.
The artist is able to make such images using SVG images uploaded from a USB flash drive. He also has a touchscreen interface so he can properly line up the gigantic prints. There is a video of this in action after the jump. I highly recommend that you check it out, because it really is something to see.
As you can see from the aforementioned video, it takes graffiti to another level. I'm not certain what else to use this for, but if you are a company with a recognizable logo, then this would be a very pointillist way to get your image across.
I would like to see if this artist can do more than just one color. Perhaps he can figure out a way to sync several of these machines together to create the Seurat masterpiece "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte".
Check out the Zbit Mini R/C Robots from ThinkGeek – these are tiny pocket dynamos that will definitely spruce up a boring day at the office as they zoom around at breakneck speed, spin 360 degrees, and even light up and make robot noises. All of them operate on different frequencies, so you won't see any controlling error occur when you're having fun with your friends. You can choose from Vintage Tech 1, Vintage Tech 2, Urban Tech 1 and Urban Tech 2 models for $14.99 a pop.

Even though Bigfoot still alludes hunters in the Pacific Northwest, Fisher-Price has decided to merchandise him as a toy. I guess that the T-shirts weren’t enough. You’d probably have to live in the Pacific Northwest to get this joke.
In fact, the popular toy company is unveiling the Imaginext Bigfoot the Monster at the Toy Fair 2010 in New York. Granted, you may feel offended with Fisher Price’s calling Bigfoot a monster, and I’m sure that someone other than me will complain.
The Bigfoot is a remote controlled toy that has a remote, and it can do facial expressions, walk, and even do somersaults. It also has some touch points so the Bigfoot will, I don’t know, laugh when you touch his tummy, or something.
If you’ve seen the Disney/PIXAR movie WALL-E last summer, then the Bandai NetTansorWeb robot will probably look strangely familiar. Robot Japan 2008 was the stage for Bandai as they presented the NetTansorWeb, which unveiled a new robotic friend with some interesting features.
The NetTansorWeb is designed with surveillance cameras, and can move around your house automatically while you are gone, checking for intruders. It has sensors that will avoid obstacles, which I can only assume stairs. You can also control the robot via Wi-Fi to check things that the autopilot is probably missing. I have no idea if you can operate the robot arms, but they look like they are just there for show. I hope that I am wrong.
I suppose there is little point of telling about yet another R2D2 product, but I might as well report on the R2-D2 Whizzwatch. No, I did not misspell wristwatch, because this is a Whizzwatch!
Yes, it is a timepiece with a little model of everyone’s favorite non-protocol droid, and you can use the watch as a remote control to make Artoo wheel all around your desk. By the way, the Artoo unit is quite large, and putting it on your wrist is like wearing a shoe around your neck.
